What is the DELF OR DALF?

The Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF) et le Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (DALF) are official qualifications awarded by the French Ministry of National Education.
They certify the level of proficiency in French of non-native speakers and are recognized worldwide. These diplomas are aligned with the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
The DELF consists of four independent diplomas corresponding to levels A1 (beginner), A2 (elementary), B1 (intermediate), and B2 (upper intermediate). The DALF corresponds to the most advanced levels: C1 (advanced) and C2 (proficiency). As each diploma is independent, candidates may register directly for the level that matches their skills.
The DELF and DALF diplomas are intended for international candidates as well as French nationals from non-French-speaking countries who do not hold a diploma from the French public secondary or higher education system.
The DELF/DALF may be required for international students wishing to enroll in a French university or higher education institution, with B2 usually being the minimum level required.
The diploma can also serve as proof of French language proficiency when applying for French nationality, for which a B2 level is required.

DATES AND REGISTRATION TO EXAMS

Les ateliers FL Biarritz are an official DELF and DALF examination center, with multiple exam sessions held throughout the year.

DELF/DALF EXAM DETAILS

The DELF and DALF exams assess four core language skills:
  • Reading comprehension
  • Listening comprehension
  • Writing
  • Speaking
The level of difficulty, duration of the tests, materials used, and types of questions vary depending on the level selected.
Each component is marked out of 25. A score below 5/25 in any component is eliminatory. To obtain the diploma, candidates must achieve a minimum total score of 50 out of 100.

Certificates are sent 2 to 4 weeks after the exam date.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Important information regarding the exam process
*For any confirmed and paid registration, a registration certificate for the exam is issued by Les ateliers FL. This document allows you to prove that you have begun your administrative procedures with the prefecture.
*In the event of success, an official certificate will be issued by France Éducation International within 4 to 6 months.
*You may register for the next exam session after the publication of results, whether you have passed or failed the exam.

Instructions to Follow on Exam Day

  1. You must present yourself for the DELF/DALF exam with a valid official photo ID (student cards are not accepted) and your exam invitation. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to sit the exam.
  2. You must arrive 15 minutes before the time indicated on your invitation. No delay will be tolerated.
  3. You must sign an attendance sheet at the beginning of each test.
  4. You must bring a black ballpoint pen for the compulsory tests.
  5. You must return all DELF DALF exam papers to the invigilator. It is strictly forbidden to take them home.
  6. You must respect exam anonymity: do not sign your paper or use your real name. You must use a pseudonym in your answers.
  7. You must maintain a calm and respectful attitude toward invigilators and other candidates.
  8. You may use a monolingual dictionary only for DALF C1 speaking test, DALF C2 reading & writing test, DALF C2 listening & speaking test.

    Exam invitations are sent approximately 2 weeks before the exam date.
